Parramatta to make AFL sporting history

PARRAMATTA is set to make sporting history this month by hosting Sydney’s first public AFL and AFLW double-header, with the GIANTS becoming the first club to stage elite men’s and women’s matches on the same day at the same venue.

The landmark event will take place at ENGIE Stadium on Sunday, August 16, where the GIANTS and the West Coast Eagles will face off in both AFL and AFLW premiership matches.

The occasion is expected to attract fans from across Greater Sydney and showcase Parramatta as a premier destination for elite sporting events.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the double-header reinforces the city’s growing reputation as a hub for world-class sport and entertainment.

“As the home of sport and entertainment, Parramatta continues to attract major events that showcase our world-class venues, create vibrant experiences for our community and draw visitors from across the region,” Cr Zaiter said.

He said major sporting events not only filled stadiums but also delivered significant economic benefits by encouraging visitors to dine, shop and explore the city before and after the games.

The GIANTS have long been leaders in promoting both the men’s and women’s competitions. In 2020, the club became the first in the AFL to stage an AFL and AFLW double-header for premiership points, and the concept is now returning to Sydney on a larger stage.

GIANTS CEO David Matthews said the club had championed the idea for many years and was thrilled to see it become a reality.

“We have been advocates for this event for a significant time, so we’re delighted to have it come to life and particularly to have our AFLW program brought to a bigger stage,” Mr Matthews said.

He added that ENGIE Stadium offered one of the AFL’s best match-day experiences and that the event would provide a unique opportunity for fans to support both GIANTS teams while celebrating elite football in Western Sydney.

The historic double-header is expected to be a major boost for Parramatta’s sporting profile and local economy.
