Parramatta powers into the night-time economy top 10

WESTERN Sydney has emerged as a national powerhouse of Australia’s night-time economy, with Parramatta, South West Sydney and Blacktown all securing places among the country’s top-performing after-dark precincts.

The Visa Australia Night-time Economy Index 2026 ranks Parramatta third nationally, rising from fourth last year and sitting behind only Melbourne Inner and Sydney City and Inner South.

South West Sydney recorded one of the biggest gains, jumping eight places from 13th to fifth, while Blacktown climbed two positions to seventh. Inner South West Sydney ranked fourth.

The results come as Australians embrace after-dark activities in greater numbers, heading out an average 80.2 times annually compared with 69.6 in 2025 — an increase of about 15 per cent.

The Index combines Visa spending insights with measures covering vibrancy, urban governance, safety and accessibility.

Visa Oceania Group Country Manager Alan Machet said night-time spending provided insights into changing consumer preferences.

“How consumers spend their nights reveals what’s changing beneath the surface, from the experiences they value to the places they choose to spend their time,” he said.

Affordability remains an issue, although the proportion of Australians citing cost as a barrier to going out fell from 66 per cent to 60 per cent. Safety concerns also declined from 45 per cent to 34 per cent.

Festivals, night markets and community events were among the experiences Australians most wanted to see more of locally.

Local businesses are also central to successful night-time precincts, with 84 per cent of respondents saying unique businesses give an area character and the same proportion valuing a mix of independent and locally owned operators.

Almost eight in 10 said businesses remaining open into the evening was important to creating a thriving night-time economy.
