Transforming the way people think about belonging and inclusion

HOW can you build an inclusive welcoming community where no one is left behind?

Cormac Russell, Founding Director of Nurture Development and faculty member of the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) Institute at DePaul University, believes neighbourhoods are the most important unit of change.

Every neighbourhood is full of hidden assets: parks, libraries, cafés, sporting clubs, community gardens, neighbours, volunteers and local champions. Taking time to map these everyday places, people and opportunities can reveal new pathways to belonging and genuine community connection.

That's the focus of Community: Where Belonging Begins – Strengthening Communities and Discovering Everyday Neighbourhood Assets. Hosted by Resourcing Inclusive Communities, Cormac is coming from Ireland to deliver this inspiring workshop.

Time and date: 9am to 5.30pm, Friday 14 August (with optional networking session until 6.30pm).

Venue: Parramatta Square Business & Events Centre.

If you want to build local communities where everyone experiences connection, contribution and belonging, don't miss this rare opportunity to learn from an internationally recognised speaker. Community-focused individuals, organisations and businesses are invited to join us.

Throughout the day, Cormac will help you discover "What's strong?" in your neighbourhood and how to build on it, rather than starting with "What's wrong?"

You’ll explore how families, neighbours, community groups, councils and organisations can create real opportunities for connection, contribution and belonging by discovering strengths in your community that you may have never noticed before.

A hands-on community mapping activity will uncover the people, places and assets that help Parramatta thrive. You’ll learn how to see beyond the obvious, identify local opportunities for connection, and practise community discovery techniques. The walk will give you the tools you need to do the same in your own neighbourhood.

You should attend to:

• Refresh and reinvigorate your perception of community.
• Meet others working towards more inclusive and vibrant communities.
• Discover community strengths you, your family or your business may be missing out on.
• Learn practical ideas you can use yourself.
• Understand how families, communities and organisations can work together.

This event is free for people with disability, family members and volunteers. $45 for professionals.
