MP launches Safer City Survey after Carlingford crimes

THE Carlingford community is in shock after two violent crimes occurred in the community in one week, including a murder and an assault.
On Saturday 11 July a 54-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted at 1Health Medical Centre in Carlingford Court before being apprehended in a brave citizen’s arrest by a pair of Good Samaritans, Brandon Earle-Joyce and Luke Erwin on Carlingford Road. It is alleged that the suspect, Corum Ash, slammed a pot plant into the woman’s face.
Police soon arrived before taking Ash to Gladesville Police Station and charging him with common assault. Ash was granted bail with a court date in August.
It was not known at the time however that this attack was linked to an earlier incident in Yennora, where a 74-year-old man was found unconscious after a bashing in the early hours of the morning.
He was rushed to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition but later died of his injuries.
By the time Police determined Ash a suspect in the bashing he had already been released into the community following the assault in Carlingford. A warrant was promptly issued for his arrest and a three day manhunt ensued.
It was also determined that Ash was a suspect in an assault on a man in his 60s in Guildford on Wednesday 8 July.
Ultimately, a neighbour’s tip to police saw Ash arrested at a home in Carlingford and taken to Parramatta Police Station where he was charged with murder. He was denied bail and remains in custody.
Then, on Wednesday, July 15 a separate murder. A man in his 30’s shot dead inside a car on North Rocks Road in Carlingford.
Details are yet to be released, however, is believed that the NSW Police’s Raptor Squad, a specialised tactical unit focused on organised crime, was at the scene.
Dr Andrew Charlton, Federal Member for Parramatta said: “I am deeply shocked and saddened by this week’s events in Carlingford. Everyone in our community deserves to feel safe, and my thoughts are with the residents.
“That’s why I am renewing my call for members of the community to take my Safer Cities Survey to tell me where the lights, cameras, and community action is needed to keep the area safe.”
